Stan Lazaridis
|
I am going to write an article about this man for the Yahoo Football website (no one else will!) and I would like to get West Ham fans' memories of him. Please share them here.
Thing that sticks in my mind is his debut, when he gave away a goal and then apologised to the whole crowd, who applauded him.
Couldn't see that happening nowadays!
Cheers

All I know is that I used to like him as a player, but I can't actually remember anything he did.
You're welcome to use that...

Ask him about the FA Cup Quarter Final at Highbury when he rampaged down the left and crossed for Berkovic who fucked it up to put us 2-0 up.

Scored from about 40 yards out against Newcastle. Might have been the game that Uriah Rennie allowed to go on for 100 minutes.

That ridiculous long distance goal is my only real memory.
He seemed to have very long legs and a very short torso.
I believe he was named after Stanley Matthews.

Very quick but not as much craft or skill on the ball as Michael Hughes

Was a guest of the Scottish & Newcastle Brewery for that one - instinctively stood up and punched the air when he scored.
Then got offered out straight away.

Ask him if he enjoyed Redknapp playing him and Robbie Slater on the wrong wings, helping neither of them.
And tell him that there was a barmy old street cleaner in Hornchurch that I saw every day on my way to college who called him Stan Lizard.

97/98 was personally my favourite season, he was bang in form for most of it too. Proper winger BUT often went missing (like most) away from home.
Made more appearances for Brum I think in the end.

So left footed but that left foot was majestic at times.

I thought he was rubbish.
Quick, but his control, passing and crossing were awful.

Re: Stan Lazaridis

I loved him when he was on form, he use to push the ball inside puff his chest out and go on these lung bursting runs from inside his own half, a bit like Collymore use to. Also had a great ability to get a cross over no matter from what angle he was facing.

He was a bit Craign Bellamy - long legs and no neck.
